Desk job, low energy? The 3 PM slump starts at 8 AM
That heavy, foggy feeling after lunch often begins with what you ate, or skipped, in the morning. Plot your own energy curve.

You know the moment. It is 3 PM, the screen is blurry, and the meeting on your calendar suddenly feels like a punishment. You reach for a third coffee or a packet of something sweet from the office pantry.
Most people blame lunch. Lunch plays a part. But the pattern for the whole day is usually set much earlier, by the first meal, or the lack of it.
Try it
Plot your energy curve
An illustration of a common pattern, not a measurement of your energy or blood sugar.
- Your first meal is 4 hours after waking. Move it earlier.
- Coffee is fine. Have it with or after breakfast instead of in place of it.
- A heavy lunch makes the afternoon swing bigger. Keep it normal, with vegetables and dal on the plate before the rice.
The 5-minute Barliva breakfast
2 spoons of Barliva and a cup of milk, 5 minutes on medium heat. Top with a sliced banana, peanut butter or a few almonds.

How a typical office morning goes
An 8 AM coffee on an empty stomach. Nothing until 11, when hunger hits and you grab a biscuit or a sandwich. A big, late lunch at 2 because you are starving. Then the slump.
When you go long hours without food and then eat a large, refined meal, you swing from very hungry to very full. That swing is what feels like a crash.
What a steady day looks like
- A breakfast within an hour or two of waking, with whole grain, protein and some fibre.
- A small mid-morning snack if you need one: fruit, roasted chana, a handful of nuts.
- A lunch that is not too large, with vegetables and dal on the plate before the rice.
- Water through the day. Mild dehydration can feel a lot like tiredness.
- A 5-minute walk after lunch, even just to the end of the corridor.
The 5-minute breakfast for people with no time

If you have time for coffee, you have time for this.
- Put 2 spoons of Barliva in a pan with a cup of milk.
- Stir on medium heat for 5 minutes until it thickens.
- Top with a sliced banana, a spoon of peanut butter or a few almonds.
- Eat it at your desk if you must. It still counts.
No stove at work? Make it the night before and carry it in a jar. It is good cold too.
Coffee is fine. Timing matters.
You do not need to give up your coffee. Try having it with or after breakfast instead of in place of it, and keep the last cup before mid-afternoon so your sleep does not suffer. Poor sleep is one of the most common reasons for the 3 PM fog, and no breakfast fixes that.
